On the next edition of our Get to Know Team TSM Series, we are talking with one of our dedicated members of the team, Peter Chalkley.
Peter has now been with the team for over a year and works as a Site Manager, playing a key role in ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards from start to finish.
We recently caught up with Peter to chat about his journey in the construction industry, his role at TSM, and what he enjoys doing outside of work
Be sure to check out the full interview below. 👇
Can you tell us a little bit about your career journey and what led you to your current role?
“I’ve been a plumber since leaving school, completing a workplace apprenticeship before achieving my NVQ Level 3 qualification and Gas certification. With more than 20 years’ experience, I’ve mainly worked in domestic plumbing, heating, and gas within the new-build sector.
Around five years ago, I decided I wanted to progress my career into the management side of the industry. I was given the opportunity to work as a Site Manager and Contracts Manager on new-build plumbing and heating projects, where I completed my SMSTS qualification and obtained my CSCS Black Card.
Joining TSM has allowed me to take the next step in my career by moving into the commercial sector. I’m now managing large-scale commercial projects across the NHS and private sector, which has been a fantastic opportunity to continue developing my skills and experience.”
What inspired you to pursue a career within the construction industry?
“Good question. I’ve always wanted to become a plumber since I was at school, having grown up in a family with a strong trade background. This inspired my interest in the industry from an early age and encouraged me to pursue a career.”
What attracted you to join TSM, and what first stood out to you when you joined the business?
“After my first interview, it was clear that TSM was a rapidly expanding business with a strong presence across electrical, PV, and heating installations. I was attracted by the company’s growth and the opportunities to be part of a forward-thinking team.”
What does a typical day look like for you as a Site Manager?
“As a Site Manager, it’s a balance of planning, leadership, technical knowledge, and problem-solving. Safety management and strong communication skills are key aspects of maintaining good client relationships. No two days are the same.”
What qualities do you think make a great Site Manager?
“A great Site Manager should be able to deliver projects safely, on time, and within budget while maintaining strong client relationships. Effective procurement and subcontractor management are also key, alongside ensuring all work remains compliant with health and safety requirements.”
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to start a career in the “construction industry?
Be prepared to work hard, as a career in construction can be challenging but incredibly rewarding. Always keep learning, as the industry is constantly evolving, and focus on developing as much technical knowledge and experience as possible. Most importantly, be reliable, committed, and willing to continuously improve.”
What’s your favourite way to relax after a busy week?
“I enjoy spending quality time with my family and making memories together. I also enjoy playing golf whenever I get the time.”
What’s the most memorable place you’ve ever visited?
“Australia – what a fantastic country.”
What’s a film, TV series, or book you think everyone should experience at least once?
“Game of Thrones!”
If you could swap lives with someone for a day, who would it be and why?
“A forensic scientist. If I could go back to school and had the ability, I would have loved to pursue a career in this profession.”
