The next edition of our Get to Know Team TSM series is dedicated to our Compliance Manager, Mark Akers.
Mark joined the team earlier this year, and has since played a crucial part in overseeing a range of projects to ensure they run smoothly by adhering to the current laws and regulations.
We recently caught up with Mark to chat about his journey in the construction industry, his role at TSM, and what he enjoys doing outside of work.
Be sure to check out the full interview below. 👇
Can you tell us about your career journey and how it led you to your current role at TSM?
“I was previously part of the installation team at Sureserve and, when the opportunity came about, I wanted to be part of TSM’s continued growth and development. This led me to joining the team and progressing into my current role as Compliance Manager.”
What inspired you to pursue a career within the construction industry?
“When I left school, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do, but I always enjoyed working with my hands and being practical. I started out as a labourer for a small business, which gave me the opportunity to learn about different areas of the construction industry. Over time, I developed a particular interest in gas and plumbing and eventually specialised in these areas.”
What do your day-to-day tasks look like as a compliance manager?
“My role involves overseeing all of the domestic gas boiler installations we complete, making sure they meet our clients’ requirements as well as current legislation and industry standards. I also ensure that our work is completed safely and to the required level of quality.”
What advice would you give someone looking to excel in the same field as you?
“Spend a reasonable amount of time out on site completing the job yourself to learn the industry and then move into a non-manual role once you have adequate experience on site.”
What’s something important you’ve learned from your time at TSM so far?
“How much nicer it is being known as a person for my knowledge rather than a number in a corporate company.”
What’s one skill you are trying to improve? (can be in or out of office)
“I need better IT skills for the modern work place.”
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
“Still assisting TSM with Growth.”
How do you spend your time out of the office?
“At the weekends I spend a lot of time at motocross with my oldest son as he competes at a club level. I also still help the motocross club as the current president of the club for 2027.”
Is there a place that you’ve visited that you would love to visit again?
“Bude in Cornwall.”
